What does ATEX mean?
ATEX is the French abbreviation for atmospheric explosion (or explosive atmosphere, translated into English). The term is used in the EU ATEX Directive 94/9/EC (now replaced by ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU), a code designed to regulate equipment used in explosive atmospheres. Usually, “ATEX” is used to refer to those ATEX certifications/standards and products suitable for use in hazardous environments.
What does ATEX certification mean?
ATEX certification has been given to equipment that has undergone the rigorous testing outlined in the EU Directive. ATEX compliant products have been and are proven to be safe for use in specific environments with explosive atmospheres, according to which the area has been certified for use.
The EU has required the use of ATEX compliance where potentially explosive atmospheres exist to ensure worker safety. These atmospheres are characterized by the possession of three things.

Mist or vapor

What does IECEX certification mean?

ATEX zones and equipment categories
Explosive atmospheres are found in different environments such as mines, factories, oil and gas rigs and flour and wood mills, to name just a few. Hazardous area zones have been defined based on the frequency of the presence of explosive materials in a given area. Each area has a specific category of equipment.
Zones 0, 1, 2 – These zones are areas dedicated to atmospheres with hazardous gases, vapors and mists.
Zone 0 – Continuous presence of explosive mixtures. Class 1 equipment is required.
Zone 1 – Intermittent presence of explosive mixtures. Requires Class 2 or 1 equipment.
Zone 2 – Explosive mixture is unusually or rarely present. Requires 3, 2, or 1 piece of equipment.
Understand the meaning of hazardous locations
Electrical equipment will explode in certain environments. For safety reasons, equipment used in areas that may have explosive dust or vapor concentrations must be equipped with special wiring and other electrical components. Class I Locations
Class I locations are places where sufficient or flammable mixtures are present or likely to be present in the air or where explosive or flammable mixtures may be generated. Class I locations are further subdivided into two divisions and three areas.
Class I Area 1: There are three different scenarios that may classify an area to an Area 1 location.
Under normal operating conditions, flammable gases or vapors may be used.
Flammable concentrations of these gases or vapors may normally be present due to maintenance or maintenance operations or leaks.
Equipment or process failure or incorrect operation may release flammable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors and may also result in the simultaneous failure of electrical equipment.
Class I Area 2: One of the following three conditions must exist for an area to be considered a Class I location.
Processing, working with, or using volatile flammable liquids or flammable gases, except that hazardous liquids, vapors, or gases are normally confined to closed containers or closed systems. Due to abnormal equipment operation.
The flammable concentration of gas or vapor is usually stopped by positive mechanical ventilation and may become hazardous due to disconnection or abnormal operation of ventilation equipment.
It is adjacent to Class I location 1, to which flammable concentration gases or vapors may sometimes be communicated unless such transmission is prevented by full positive pressure ventilation from a clean air source and effective protective measures are taken to prevent ventilation failure.
Class I Area 0: Either of the following two conditions must exist for an area to be considered Class I
The flammable concentration of flammable gases or vapors continues.
Flammable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors continue to exist.
Class I Area 1: One of the following four conditions must exist in order for an area to be considered a Class I location.
Flammable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors may be present under normal operating conditions.
Flammable concentrations of combustible gases or vapors are normally present as a result of maintenance or maintenance operations or as a result of leaks.
The nature of the operating or handling equipment is such that equipment failure or incorrect operation may result in flammable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors that could release flammable concentrations and cause electrical equipment to fail at the same time, resulting in the electrical equipment becoming an ignition source.

They can be renewed only due to accidental rupture or damage. Containers or systems, or unusual operations for the handling, processing or use of liquid or gas equipment.
