ATEX comes from the French ATmosphère EXplosible (Explosive Environment), which refers to the European Union (EU) directive that regulates explosion protection. In order to be able to manufacture, import or distribute explosion-protected equipment within the EU, companies must meet ATEX requirements. There are also requirements for companies that have an explosion-proof area at their site.
ATEX certification in the EU is similar to KOSHA in Korea and EAC in Russia.
There are two ATEX directives: the Equipment Directive 2014/34/EU (formerly known as ATEX 95, 94/9/EC) for manufacturers and the Workplace Directive ATEX 137 (99/92/EC) for employers with explosion-protected work areas.

What is Ex zones
Explosion hazard areas are divided into zones based on the probability of risk. Within the EU, these are defined by the IEC/EN standard (IEC/EN 60079-10-1 or 2) as directed by ATEX.
Gases are divided into three zones: Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2. Dusts correspond to three zones: Zone 20, Zone 21 and Zone 22. In short, Zone 0 (Zones 0 and 20) has the highest risk probability, and Zone 2 the lowest (Zones 2 and 22).
How to classify the risk is a bit complicated. A hazardous area can have several different zones. Risk factors include how long the explosion hazard has been present and how far the source is from the area in question.
With the classification of zones, there is a big difference between Zones 0-1 and Zone 2. Zone 2 has much lower requirements for explosion-proof products. They are so low that you could almost say that Zone 2 products are not regulated. For example, there are no third-party testing requirements.
Explosion-proof zones are further classified according to IEC/EN standards. The category classification is used for equipment labeling and may also appear on the Explosion-Proof Zone symbol, as follows.
Hazardous Area Marking. ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 and Zone 3.
The category classification indicates the Ex Zone and Equipment Protection Level (EPL) for the following areas.
Category 1 – Equipment can be used in Zone 0 or Zone 20 and must have an EPL a
Category 2 – equipment can be used in Zone 1 or Zone 21 and must have an EPL b
Class 3 – equipment can be used in Zone 2 or Zone 22 and must have EPL c
Class 1 equipment can also be used in Class 2 and Class 3 areas, and Class 2 equipment can also be used in Class 2 areas. Class 3 equipment can only be used in Class 3 areas. Naturally, Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3 equipment can be used in non-hazardous applications.
What is Intrinsically Safe?
Governed by the international standard IECEx 60079-11, intrinsic safety is a method of making an explosion-proof product safe for use in hazardous areas. This means that the product is intrinsically safe. For example, the product uses so little energy that it is unlikely to ignite anything.
