
ATEX Basic Information
ATEX means ‘Atmosphères’ explosives. atex 95 and 137 relate to the establishment of Articles 95 and 137 of the EC Convention on the improvement of the working environment respectively.
The revised Working Conditions Decree sets out what obligations employers must fulfil if work is carried out in explosive atmospheres.
The obligations are as follows:
Firstly, the employer must draw up a written document on explosion hazards based on a risk assessment, including the identification and assessment of explosion hazards.
Secondly, the employer must divide the work area in an explosive atmosphere into different hazard zones and mark these zones with hazard symbols. The new hazard signs are triangular in shape and contain the letters EX. Employers have until 1 July 2006 to obtain the new hazard signs.
Thirdly, the employer takes measures to prevent explosive atmospheres from occurring as far as possible. If this is not entirely possible, the atmosphere must be prevented from catching fire, for example by using only materials that do not cause any sparks or high temperatures. Nevertheless, in the event of an explosion, the employer must ensure that its effects remain as limited as possible.
The Working Conditions Decree contains a transitional law to enable employers to adapt their workplaces to the new regulations. Workplaces that were already in use before 1 July 2003 must meet the provisions of the revised decree by 30 June 2006. Workplaces used after 1 July 2003, or workplaces that have been changed, extended or renovated since then, must comply directly with the new regulations. the ATEX Directive.
ATEX Directive 94/9 / EC
All new installations in explosive atmospheres must meet the requirements of the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC, which is derived from the French word “ATmosphère EXplosible”. This new directive was introduced on 1 March 1996 and became mandatory on 1 July 2003.
The most important change compared to the previous directive is that ATEX applies not only to gas explosive atmospheres but also to dust explosive atmospheres.
The different environments are subdivided into three different zones. Gas:Zone 0
1 and 2 for dust; zones 20, 21 and 22.
