Electrical equipment in hazardous areas
In electrical and safety engineering, a hazardous location (HazLoc, pronounced haz-lōk) is a place where a fire or explosion hazard may exist. Sources of such hazards include combustible or flammable gases, vapours, dust, fibres and droplets. Electrical equipment installed in these locations may provide a source of ignition due to arcing or high temperatures. Standards and regulations exist to identify such locations, to classify the hazards and to design equipment to be safe for use in such locations.
Light switches may produce small, harmless sparks when they are turned on or off. In an ordinary household this is inconsequential, but if a flammable atmosphere is present, the arcing may cause an explosion. The presence of such atmospheres is common, or at least generally possible, in many industrial, commercial and scientific environments. Protection against fire/explosion is of interest for reasons of personnel safety and reliability.
Several protection strategies exist. The simplest method is to minimise the amount of electrical equipment installed in a hazardous area by keeping the equipment completely away from the area or by reducing the danger of the area (e.g. by changing the process or using clean air for ventilation).
When equipment has to be placed in a hazardous location, it can be designed to reduce the risk of fire or explosion. Intrinsically safe design equipment to operate using a minimum amount of energy insufficient to cause ignition. Explosion-proof design equipment to contain the risk of ignition, to prevent the entry of hazardous substances and/or to contain any fire/explosion that may occur.
Standardisation and testing of hazardous area equipment is dealt with in different ways in different countries. The terminology of hazards and protective measures may vary. Documentation requirements also vary. As world trade becomes more global, international standards are slowly converging so that national regulators can approve a wider range of acceptable techniques.
The process of determining the type and size of a hazardous location is called classification. Location classification, equipment testing and inventories and installation inspections are usually overseen by government agencies. For example, in the USA by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Typical gas hazards arise from hydrocarbons, but hydrogen and ammonia are also common flammable industrial gases.
Class I, Zone 1 Classification Location
An area where a flammable concentration of a flammable gas, vapour or liquid is present at all or part of the time under normal operating conditions. class I, zone 1 areas include a combination of zone 0 and zone 1 areas.
Zone 0 Classification Location
An area where flammable gases, vapours or liquids are present continuously or for extended periods of time under normal operating conditions. An example of this is the vapour space above the liquid at the top of a tank or drum, which is considered a Class I Zone 1 environment by the ANSI/NEC classification method. As a guide to Zone 0, this can be defined as more than 1000 hours/year or >10% of the time. 
Zone 1 Classification Location
An area where flammable gases, vapours or liquids may be present under normal operating conditions. As a guide for Zone 1, this can be defined as 10-1000 hours/year or 0.1-10% of the time. 
Class I, Zone 2 or Zone 2 Classification Location
An area where combustible gases, vapours or liquids are unlikely to be present under normal operating conditions. In this area, the gas, vapour or liquid will only be present under abnormal conditions (most commonly leaking under abnormal conditions). As a general guide for Zone 2, hazardous substances should only be present for 10 hours/year or 0-0.1% of the time. 
Also known as non-hazardous locations or ordinary locations, these are identified as neither Class I, Zone 1 or Zone 2; Zone 0, Zone 1 or Zone 2; or any combination thereof. Such areas include dwellings or offices where the only risk of explosive or flammable gases being released is from propellants in aerosol sprays etc. The only explosive or flammable liquids are paints and brush cleaners. These are designated as having a very low risk of causing explosions and a greater risk of fire (although gas explosions in residential buildings do occur). Chemical and other plants have unclassified locations where there is absolute certainty that hazardous gases are diluted to concentrations below 25% of their lower flammability limit (or lower explosive limit (LEL)).
