Understanding the Meaning of ‘Intrinsic Safe’
Explosions and fires are common in many oil and gas chemical industries. Sometimes the risks are very obvious, such as when producing or handling flammable gases such as hydrogen and propane, but in other cases they are less obvious. In particular, dust is often highly combustible.
Fires require fuel, oxygen and an ignition source. Combustible gases, vapors and dust provide fuel, oxygen is present in most environments, and ignition may come from sparks or hot surfaces. Every fire is dangerous, but in the more extreme cases, combustion is so rapid that it causes an explosion.

When do I need intrinsically safe equipment?
If the equipment is used in an area where combustible materials are present, measures must be taken to minimize the risk of fire and explosion
Exceptions to the need for certification are in the case of “simple equipment”. This is the term used for very low power or passive devices that do not cause ignition. Good examples are thermocouples and RTDs.
How do intrinsically safe devices such as intrinsically safe cell phones work?
To avoid inflammation, the available services and the maximum temperature must be minimized. The definition of maximum available service is complex, but it can usually be assumed that the voltage is less than 29 V and less than 300 mA. A simple view is that the performance must be less than 1.3 W. (Note that many devices require 24 V and can usually be interpreted in terms of less than 500 mA; in many cases, this is sufficient for approval).
Six categories define the temperature level. Typically, devices wearing the T4 symbol are considered self-safe because the temperature does not exceed 135°C (275°F) (devices that lose less than 1.3 W of output typically stay below this temperature).

Temperature measurement usually corresponds to the “simple device” rule, although it may be necessary for transmitting heat signals over large distances.
Are certified stand-alone devices more expensive than non-certified versions?
IS devices are usually more expensive than non-certified versions. The basic construction of the IS barrier uses Zener diodes to achieve voltage limiting, resistance to current limiting and fuses, all of which are not expensive.

No special equipment cannot replace these methods in all applications, as they depend on low performance and temperature. Where possible, it usually saves significant installation and maintenance costs.
Does self-security affect the performance of certified devices?
No. Performance is the same as devices that are not yet certified and are more reliable. These devices use the same components as non-certified devices, but are designed in such a way that the amount of energy and heat development stored in the event of internal errors is limited.

In many industrial, chemical and process-related environments, the risk of explosion is high, which can be attributed to the actual or potential presence of flammable gases and vapors, dust or fibers. Such environments are described as “hazardous” and must be designed in such a way as to exclude the possibility of flammable materials.
In such an environment, it is often necessary to incorporate electrical instruments. If this is unavoidable, there are three methods: placing the equipment in explosion-protected housing, flushing the housing with inert gas or applying self-protective design principles.
