Natural gas is a fossil energy source that is formed deep in the earth’s surface. Natural gas contains many different compounds. The search for natural gas began with geologists who studied the structure and processes of the Earth. They locate the types of geological formations that may contain natural gas deposits.
Geologists often use seismic surveys on land and in the ocean to find suitable locations to drill for natural gas and oil wells. Seismic surveys generate and measure seismic waves in the earth to obtain information about the geology of rock formations. Seismic surveys on land may use an impact truck, which has a vibrating pad that strikes the ground to generate seismic waves in the rock below. Sometimes small amounts of explosives are used. Seismic surveys in the ocean use sound waves that generate acoustic waves to explore the geology beneath the seafloor.
If the results of a seismic survey indicate that a site has the potential to produce natural gas, an exploratory well is drilled and tested. Test results provide information about the quality and quantity of gas available from the resource.
Drilling of gas wells and production of natural gas
One or more production (or development) wells are drilled if the results of the test well indicate that the geologic formation has sufficient natural gas to produce and make a profit. Natural gas wells can be drilled vertically and horizontally into natural gas-bearing formations. In conventional natural gas deposits, natural gas typically flows readily upward through the well to the surface.
In the United States and some other countries, natural gas is produced from shale and other types of sedimentary rock formations by forcing water, chemicals and sand down the well under high pressure. This process, called hydraulic fracturing or fracking, sometimes called unconventional production, breaks up the formation, releases the natural gas from the rock and allows it to flow to the well and upward to the surface. At the top of the surface well, the natural gas is fed into a gathering pipeline and transported to a natural gas processing plant.
Natural gas processing for sale and consumption
Natural gas from a natural gas or crude oil well is called wet natural gas because, in addition to methane, it typically contains NGLs (ethane, propane, butane and pentane) and water vapor. Wellhead natural gas may also contain non-hydrocarbons such as sulfur, helium, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide, most of which must be removed from the natural gas before it can be sold to consumers.
From the wellhead, the gas is sent to a processing plant where the water vapor and non-hydrocarbon compounds are removed and the NGLs are separated from the wet gas and sold separately. Some ethane often remains in the processed natural gas. The separated NGLs are referred to as natural gas plant liquids (NGPL) and the processed gas is referred to as dry, consumer grade or pipeline grade gas. Some wellhead natural gas is sufficiently dry to meet pipeline delivery standards without processing. A chemical called an odorant is added to the natural gas to detect leaks in the natural gas pipeline. Dry natural gas is piped to underground storage yards or distribution companies and then delivered to consumers.
