What is Intrinsically Safe Mobile Phone?

Intrinsically Safe (IS) is a protection technique used for safe operation in hazardous areas by limiting the amount of energy, power and heat available for ignition. In signalling and control circuits that can operate at low currents and voltages, intrinsically safe methods simplify circuits and reduce installation costs compared to other protection methods. In applications such as petrochemical refineries and mines, areas with dangerous flammable gases or dust can be found. As a discipline, it is the application of intrinsic safety of the instrument. Principles of operation
In normal use, electrical equipment usually generates small arcs (internal sparks) at switches, electric brushes, connectors and other places. Compact electrical equipment also generates heat, which in some cases may be the source of ignition.

There are various ways to make equipment safe for use in explosive hazardous areas. Intrinsically safe (indicated by “I” in the ATEX and IECEX explosion classifications) is one of several methods available for electrical equipment. Others include explosion-proof (NEC 500) or explosion-insulated enclosures (“D” in IEC, ATEX and NEC 505), enhanced safety (“E”), encapsulation (“M “), closures (” NC “), sealing devices (” NC “), hermetic seals (” NC “), restricted breathing enclosures (” NR “), oil-immersed enclosures (” NR “) ” NR”), oil immersion (” O”), optical radiation protection (” OP”), ventilation (” P”) , ” P “), powder or sand filling (” Q “), special protection (” S “) and dust ignition protection (” t “). There are several considerations when designing intrinsically safe electronic equipment: reducing or eliminating internal sparks, controlling component temperatures and eliminating component spacing that can allow dust to short circuit. By limiting the energy available in any given circuit and throughout the system, the potential for sparks in components is eliminated. Under certain fault conditions (e.g. internal short circuits in semiconductor devices), temperature can become an issue as the temperature of the component can rise even to certain explosive gases in normal use. Protective measures, such as limiting the current by means of resistors and fuses, must be used to ensure that a combustible atmosphere is not reached under any circumstances at temperatures that could lead to spontaneous ignition. In the highly compact electronic devices in use today, PCBs often have component spacing that can create arcs between components if dust or other particles enter the circuit, so component spacing, location and isolation are important to the design.

The main concept behind intrinsic safety is to limit the electrical and thermal energy available in the system so that ignition of hazardous environments (explosive gases or dust) does not occur. This is achieved by ensuring that only low voltages and currents enter the hazardous area and that significant energy storage is not possible.

One of the most common methods of protection is to limit the current using series resistors (using the type of resistor that always fails); and to limit the voltage with multiple Zener diodes. In a Zener barrier, the hazardous input potential is grounded, whereas current isolation barriers have no direct connection between the safe and hazardous area circuits by inserting an insulating layer between the two. Certification standards for intrinsically safe designs (mainly IEC 60079-11, but since 2015, IEC TS 60079-39) usually require that the barrier does not exceed the approved voltage and current level and causes specified damage to the limited component.

Equipment or devices intended for use in hazardous areas will be designed for low voltages and currents and will be designed in the absence of any large capacitors or inductors that can be discharged in a spark. The equipment will be connected to a control panel in a non-hazardous area containing a safety barrier using an approved wiring method. The safety barrier ensures that approved voltages and currents will not exceed the hazardous area during normal operation, even if accidental contact between the instrument circuit and other power sources fails according to the EPL application of the equipment protection level.

Intrinsic protection standards are mainly set by the IEC, the International Electrotechnical Commission, but different bodies have also developed intrinsic safety standards. Bodies can be run by governments or be made up of insurance companies, manufacturers and members of industry who are interested in safety standards. Certification bodies allow manufacturers to affix a label or mark to identify that equipment has been designed to the relevant product safety standard. Examples of such bodies in North America are Factory Common Research, which certifies radios, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), which certifies mobile phones, and the Canadian Standards Association in Canada. [1] In the EU, the standard for intrinsic safety certification is Cenelec Standard EN 60079-11, which should be certified in accordance with the ATEX Directive, while in other countries/regions of the world, IEC standards follow the IEC standard.
